OUR TOWN: FIGUERES

Figueres is a town situated in the north-east of Catalonia. It is the capital of Alt Empordà, it is near the French border, about 15 kilometres from the Mediterranean sea (Empuriabrava, Roses beaches ) and 2 hours by car from the Pyrenees (Vall Ter...)

The town is the birthplace of Salvador Dalí, the best surrealist painter in the world. The Dalí museum is very large and attracts many visitors every year specially during the summer. Sant Ferran Castle is another important monument in Figueres.

Figueres is also the birthplace of Narcís Monturiol inventor of the first successful machine-powered submarine.

The population of our town is about 44.000 inhabitants. It has increased in the last 10 years mostly due to immigration from foreign countries.

Apart from museums, Figueres has a very big hospital (opposite to Alexandre Deulofeu), near the hospital we can find two big swimming pools (an indoor and an outdoor swimming pool). The sports pavilion is next to Figueres Hospital. There is also a football pitch on the way to Roses.

There are two green areas: Park Bosc (The Forest Park) and Park de les Aigües (the Water Park). The Forest Park is larger than the Water Park.

Figueres is a very commercial town with a lot of restaurants, hotels, shops, pubs and coffee bars.
